LOCKSS-DOCS Project Activity Schedule

Activity 1: Spring Workshop Planning (November 2002 - February 2003)

  1. Explore possible location(s) and associated costs for workshop
  2. Confirm dates and location with partner group and LOCKSS technical staff
  3. Develop agenda

Activity 2: Develop Needs Assessment (January - June 2003)

  1. Review/refine outline of this deliverable from project proposal (complete by end of January 2003)

 

Needs Assessment for the Depository Library Community: Report Outline

a. Bibliographic Content structure:

i. What does the .gov domain look like (review CDL Mellon interim report)
ii. What technical changes are needed to the LOCKSS technology to make it work with gov docs?
iii. What addition to the LOCKSS software does the gov docs community need

b. Social and Economic Aspects of Collection Development:

i. What preservation architectures are appropriate for gov docs
ii. Apart from preservation and access, are there other roles that the depository libraries could play in a system of web-based gov docs
iii. Does LOCKSS application to gov docs increase use of this literature?

c. Legal Aspects of Collection Development

i. LOCKSS is an append-lonely database. Is it acceptable, when the Federal Government recalls documents, to turn off documents
ii. Does LOCKSS address authenticity concerns

 

  1. Divide responsibility for drafting report (early February 2003)

a. Partners to take lead on individual sections
b. Grant provides support for legal consultation on section C

  1. Conduct some of the planning activity for this deliverable at a breakfast or lunch meeting at ALA midwinter in Philadelphia
  2. Present and discuss draft reports at Spring Workshop
  3. Continue refining report via online mechanisms through June 2003
  4. Consider need for either second Workshop or breakfast or lunch meeting in conjunction with ALA Annual meeting.


Activity 3: Develop NSF Implementation Grant Proposal (June-September 2003)

  1. Review draft Needs Assessment at Spring Workshop
  2. LOCKSS technical staff and volunteers from partner group work closely on technical specifications for the grant proposal
  3. Draft Grant Proposal due August 2003 and vetted with partner group
  4. Submit Grant Proposal to NSF October 2003
